Master of St John the Baptist

( fl Upper Rhine, c. 1450–60). German engraver. He has been named after the large-format engraving St John the Baptist with the Agnus Dei (L 11). A further ten engravings are attributed to him, St Sebastian (L 10) and nine sheets of a series of standing Apostles (L 1–9). His work is closely related to that of the Master of the Passion of Christ, and he was one of the best successors of the Master of the Playing Cards on the Upper Rhine. His relation to the Master E.S., and therefore the question of the dating of his work, has not been clarified.

Part of the Masters, anonymous, and monogrammists family
