Master of the Piccolomini Madonna [Piccolomini Master]
( fl Siena, ?14501500). Italian sculptor or group of sculptors. A number of reliefs of the Virgin and Child have been collected together under this name. All show the Virgin turned three-quarter face, standing behind a parapet upon which the Infant Christ reclines, raising his hand in benediction. Variations occur in the decoration of the parapet and the presence or absence of candelabra and puttis heads in the sky. In some examples the Virgin holds a cartouche. By the 1990s nine marble examples were known: Siena, Col. Chigi-Saracini; Paris, Louvre, 609; Pesaro, Mus. Civ.; Florence, Mus. Bardini; Paris, Louvre, ex-Arconati Visconti priv. col.; Benneboek, Pannwitz priv. col.; London, V&A; Pianiga (Padua), parish church; and New York, Met. There is also one in stucco (Florence, priv. col.).
