Master of Mansel

( fl c. 1420–60). South Netherlandish illuminator. The name is given to the illuminator of the majority of the 65 miniatures in a two-volume Fleur des histoires by Jean Mansel (Brussels, Bib. Royale Albert 1er, MSS 9231–2). Some of the miniatures, however, particularly in the second volume, were painted by SIMON MARMION. Two volumes of a three-volume copy of the same text were also illuminated by the Master of Mansel (Vienna, Schottenkirche, Stiftsgal., MSS 167/139–168/140). As Mansel wrote the text around 1440, and the manuscripts—particularly those in Vienna—date from soon after this, a direct connection between the author and the illuminator’s workshop is possible.

Part of the Masters, anonymous, and monogrammists family
