Martínez, Domingo

(b Seville, 1688; d Seville, 1749). Spanish painter. He was the leading painter in Seville during the first half of the 18th century. He trained under Lucas Valdés Leal and is known to have been affable, energetic and intelligent, which enhanced his reputation as an artist. When Philip V moved the court to Seville in 1727, Martínez became a friend of the French painter Jean Ranc, who recommended him to the King for appointment as a court painter when the court returned to Madrid in 1734. Martínez refused the appointment, preferring to remain in Seville, where he had a large workshop, in which he taught such artists as Juan de Espina, Andrés Rubira (d 1760) and Pedro Tortolero.
