Maillart, Robert
(b Berne, 6 Feb 1872; d Geneva, 6 April 1940). Swiss engineer and builder. He studied civil engineering (1890–94) at the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (ETH), Zurich, under Wilhelm Ritter (1847–1906), perhaps the greatest teacher of bridge design in the late 19th century. After graduating Maillart worked for Pümpin & Herzog (1894–6) and for the Tiefbauamt (1897–9), Zurich, where he designed his first major bridge, the Stauffacher, an unreinforced three-hinged concrete arch that followed Ritter’s ideas. Maillart then moved (1899) to the design-construction firm of Frote & Westermann, Zurich, where he designed the first hollow box of concrete for the three-hinged arch over the River Inn (1901), Zuoz, for which Ritter acted as consultant.
