(1) Stefano Magnasco
(b Genoa, c. 1635; d Genoa, c. 167073). Painter. He trained in Genoa in the workshop of Valerio Castello, whose influence can be seen in the Mystic Marriage of St Catherine (Genoa, priv. col., see Gavazza, 1987, fig. 179). Other painters he looked towards were Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione and Anthony van Dyck, as in the Crucified Christ Comforted by an Angel (Genoa, S Maria delle Vigne). The Adoration of the Magi (Genoa, priv. col., see Biavati Frabetti, fig. 7) shows a naturalism characteristic of early 17th-century Genoese painting.
