McIlworth, Thomas

( fl New York, 1757–69/70). American painter. An itinerant New York artist, he is first noted as becoming a member of the St Andrews Society in New York in 1757. The following year, on 8 May, he advertised his skills as a portrait painter in the New York Mercury. Around 1761, following his marriage, McIlworth moved to nearby Westchester, where he remained briefly before settling for three years in upstate New York, in the Albany–Schenectady region. Apparently he returned to New York but soon afterwards departed for Montreal, where he is last recorded in October 1767.
