Lome [le Home], Jehan [Lomme, Janin]

(b ?Tournai; fl 1411; d Viana, 1449). Netherlandish sculptor, active in Spain. He was probably trained in Paris. He came to Navarre in 1411 to work on the tomb of Charles III and Eleanor and settled there for the rest of his life; he is documented in the royal service at Olite, Sangüesa, Tafalla, Pamplona and Viana. The double tomb of Charles and Eleanor, situated in the nave of Pamplona Cathedral, was executed between 1413 and 1419 by Lome and his assistants, and it is one of the best examples of Late Gothic funerary sculpture in the Iberian Peninsula. The form of the monument, a free-standing tomb chest with arcaded sides sheltering cloaked weepers and the recumbent effigies of the sovereigns on top, follows Franco-Flemish traditions. Lome’s courtly style can be identified in other contemporary works in Navarre, for example the Coronation of the Virgin portal on the north transept of Pamplona Cathedral; the figures of Queen Blanche of Navarre and the Virgin and Child at the entrance to the atrium of S María, Olite; and the niche-tomb of Bishop Sancho Sánchez de Oteiza (1420–25) in the chapel of S Juan Evangelista in Pamplona Cathedral. Through the work of his followers, Lome’s influence was felt in Navarre until the second half of the 15th century.
