Lombardo, Tommaso [da Lugano]
( fl c. 153650). Italian sculptor. He is first recorded as an assistant of Jacopo Sansovino in Venice from 1536 to 1546. He may have trained previously with Sansovino since his role during these years was that of factotum who carried out Sansovinos ideas efficiently and faithfully. With Luca Lancia he blocked out the marble Virgin, Child and Angels (Venice, Doges Pal., chapel), and he also worked on the first of the marble pergoli (balconies) designed by Sansovino for the choir of S Marco (15367). At the same time he supervised the production of the bronze reliefs for the first pergolo. In 15424, he was in charge of another set of bronze reliefs for the second pergolo, and he also oversaw the early stages in the production of Sansovinos bronze sacristy door for S Marco (1546).
