Linck, Jean-Antoine

(b Geneva, 14 Dec 1766; d Geneva, 20 Sept 1843). Swiss painter and printmaker. He was trained by his father, the engraver Johann Konrad Linck (1735–95). Jean-Antoine used a method of engraving perfected in 1766 by Johann Ludwig Aberli. The lines of the drawing were engraved (with a soft cutting edge) on to a copper plate; the print thus obtained was then coloured by hand. Engravings such as View of the Waterfall at Pissevache (Geneva, Mus. Ethnog.) or View of the Waterfall at Arpenaz (Annecy, Paul Payot priv. col.) had a similar effect to that of a watercolour. In 1789 Linck took part in the first exhibition of painting and sculpture in Geneva, and the gouaches that he showed, for example View of Nant d’Arpennaz, immediately established his reputation. He dedicated himself from that time solely to landscape painting, particularly to mountain landscapes. His preferred technique was gouache; he made up his own colours and often used a fig-juice fixative of his own invention. In 1802 he married Jeanne-Pernette Bouvier, whose family had considerable influence and successfully advanced his work. Among Linck’s distinguished patrons were the Empress Josephine Bonaparte (who bought his gouaches for the Château de Malmaison, near Paris), Lucien Bonaparte, Joseph Fesch and Catherine II, Empress of Russia.
