Lespingola [Spingola], François
(b Joinville, Meuse, 1644; d Paris, 16 July 1705). French sculptor. He was in Rome as a student at the Académie de France from 1665 to 1675 and in 1672 became a member of the Accademia di S Luca. During his years in Italy he may also have visited Florence. On his return to France he was received (reçu) as a member of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in 1676 on presentation of the low relief the Union of the Académies of France and Rome (untraced). He was principally employed on royal works at the château of Versailles and elsewhere. Among his works at Versailles are a charming, classicizing, stone statue of a woman representing Altimetry on the attic of the Aile du Midi (1681; in situ) and a number of decorative works executed in collaboration with Jacques Buirette (163199). These include models for trophies (16789 and 16823; destr.) subsequently cast in bronze for the Cabinets des Dômes in the park and for the Salon de la Guerre and the Grande Galerie (bronzes, Versailles, Château), as well as the lively group of Three Children Playing with a Swan (bronze, 16857; in situ) for the Parterre dEau.
