Late Gothic [Ger. Spätgotik].
Term used to describe the last stage of development of medieval art in western and central Europe. An organic connection with the traditions of EARLY GOTHIC and HIGH GOTHIC is implied, yet at the same time the specific character of the period is stressed. The chronological limits and dominant features of the style are variously defined, according to the criteria adopted by historians.
