Lapis, Gaetano [il Caraccetto]

(b Cagli, nr Urbino, 13 Aug 1706; d Rome, 1776). Italian painter. His precocious talent for drawing and painting encouraged his father to send him to Rome for a period of study c. 1720. He remained there until his death, apart from a long period from 1732 to 1754 when he went back to live in Cagli for work and family reasons. In Rome he was offered hospitality by Cristoforo Creo ( fl 1763), a mediocre painter who was also his first teacher. Lapis soon transferred to the school of Sebastiano Conca, one of the most noted painters of the time, who shared the teaching with his cousin Giovanni Conca ( fl 1706–39). Lapis was their pupil for about four years, during which time he pursued his studies in drawing and composition with the help of life classes. At this period he acquired the nickname of il Caraccetto, which remained with him all his life. The name was suggested by the thoroughness of his studies and by his technical skill, both of which caused the other pupils to compare him to Annibale Carracci.
