(2) Matthäus Küsel
(b Augsburg, 12 Feb 1629; d Augsburg, 1681 or shortly before). Brother of (1) Melchior Küsel I. He was in Venice in 1656 and worked in Vienna and Munich on several occasions, receiving commissions from the Bavarian and imperial courts and being appointed imperial court engraver, for which reason he sometimes signed himself S.C.M. Sculptor (HRH sculptor). His engravings (Hollstein mentions 278) comprise mainly portraits, pamphlets, calendars, book illustrations, treatise sheets, based on his own or others originals, and stage sets, including 40 illustrations (Hollstein, nos 24771) in Il pomo doro (1667) by Francesco Sbarra (161168). His drawings include an Interior with a Lady Making Lace, and a Gentleman (Berlin, Kupferstichkab.) and a Gentleman as Gardener (Stuttgart, Staatsgal.).
