Králík, Emil

(b Prague, 21 Feb 1880; d Prague, 26 June 1946). Czech architect, teacher and painter. He studied architecture at the Technical University, Prague, under Josef Schulz, and after graduating he worked for a short time as an assistant to Jan Koula before being invited to work in Brno. He was a member of the Architects’ Club and was an adherent of the classical approach to modern architecture, producing symmetrically planned, but well-organized spaces. His early buildings reveal features of Art Nouveau, for example the theatre (1912) at Mladá Boleslav, which has restrained geometric ornament. He later used more monumental but simplified forms. The house (1910) for Frantisek Kovarík in Prostejov is an early example of Raumplan, a spatial planning technique developed by Adolf Loos, which created interlocking spaces across levels. Králík was a founder of the architectural school at the Technical University, Brno, where he was a professor (1920–46). In the mid-1920s, following the competition for the National Exhibition Centre in Brno, he was appointed its Chief Architect and he designed the entrance building and exhibition theatre there (both 1928). His last important work was the General Pensions Institute (1932) in Brno. Králík was also an accomplished painter.
