Korzhev’s early works attracted attention by their severe verism—in opposition to contemporary official, ceremonial trends—as in The Days of the War (1954; Tashkent, Mus. A. Uzbekistan), where the centre is occupied by an empty canvas: a symbol of creativity opposed to the political troubles of the time.
