Korzhev [Korzhev-Chuvelev], Gely (Mikhaylovich)
(b Moscow, 7 July 1925). Russian painter. He studied at the Surikov Art Institute in Moscow (194450) under S. V. Gerasimov. Korzhevs early works attracted attention by their severe verismin opposition to contemporary official, ceremonial trendsas in The Days of the War (1954; Tashkent, Mus. A. Uzbekistan), where the centre is occupied by an empty canvas: a symbol of creativity opposed to the political troubles of the time.
