Koerbecke, Johann

(b c. 1420; d Münster, 13 June 1490). German painter. He is one of the few artists from Westphalia about whom something is known. In 1443 he and his wife owned the house in Münster that his father Hermann Koerbecke had refurbished in 1435. His subsequent purchases of land show his success as a painter, and the fact that he was often named as a witness in business deals and as a negotiator on the purchase of securities suggests that he had a recognized social position. Between 1440 and 1460 he was a member of the brotherhood of Our Lady in St Ägidius, Münster, and his death date is recorded in the necrology of the Cistercian monastery of Marienfeld (Gütersloh), indicating more than simply a business association.
