(6) Kano Soshu [Motohide; Genshu; Shinsetsu; Sushin; Soshu]
(b 1551; d 1601). Son of (3) Kano Shoei and brother of (5) Kano Eitoku. He acted as head of the Kano studio in 15769 while Eitoku was employed by Oda Nobunaga at Azuchi Castle. From 1582 he worked for Toyotomi Hideyoshi (153698) in Harima province (now part of Hyogo Prefect.), for whom he painted a series of wooden panels depicting the Thirty-six Immortal Poets (Sanju rokkasen zu; Kyoto, Hokoku Shrine). He returned to Kyoto by 1590, and sometime before 1596 he was awarded the honorary religious title hogen (Eye of the Law) given to artists of high standing. Soshus last major commission was the decoration (15991600; destr.) of the shinden (main house) of the Katsura Detached Palace (see KYOTO, §IV, 10) for Prince Toshihito (15791629).
