Jorhan.

Family of sculptors of Bohemian descent, active in Bavaria. Johann Wenzeslaus Jorhan (b Bilín, Bohemia, c. 1695; d Griesbach im Rottal, bur 16 March 1752) was probably a journeyman in the employ of Joseph Ignaz Reiser ( fl c. 1705–20) in Passau, before setting up c. 1720 as a master in Griesbach. Works of his of particular interest are the sculptures (1732–4) for the altars of the Cistercian monastery church of Seligenthal, Landshut, and the high altar (c. 1746) in the Wallfahrtskirche, Anzenberg. His son, Christian Jorhan (i) (b Griesbach, bapt 6 Oct 1727; d Landshut, 8 Oct 1804), trained first with his father and then for many years in such places as Riedlingen an der Donau, Salzburg, Augsburg and under Johann Baptist Straub in Munich; in 1755 he settled in Landshut. His oeuvre is extensive. He supplied individual sculptures and altars and fitted out entire churches, chiefly in Lower Bavaria, but also in the area around Erding. His style was strongly influenced by Straub; many of his sculptures rank with the best Bavarian work of that period. Characteristic works can be seen in the churches of Reichenkirchen (1756–9), Niederding (c. 1760–62), Altenerding (1760–80) and Maria Thalheim (1764–70). Christian Jorhan (ii) (b Landshut, 6 Aug 1758; d Passau, 14 July 1844), son of Christian Jorhan (i), set up as master in Passau in 1794; as a sculptor, he ranks below his father and grandfather.
