Jollivet, Pierre-Jules
(b Paris, 26 June 1794; d Paris, 7 Sept 1871). French painter and lithographer. He first studied architecture with Jean-Jacques Huvé (17421808) and Charles Famin and then turned to painting, entering the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris on 11 May 1822. He remained there until 1825 and was a pupil of François-Louis Dejuinne (17861844) and of Antoine-Jean Gros. He became interested in lithography very early on and in 1826 travelled to Spain to work on the Colección litographica de cuadros del rey de España el señor Fernando VII (Madrid, 1826), a catalogue of the art collections of Ferdinand VII, King of Spain, at the Museo Real in Madrid. Jollivet contributed the first 18 plates to this publication and, on his return to Paris, resumed painting. He specialized in painting history and genre subjects, and his journey to Spain supplied him with numerous subjects for the latter, which were much admired at the Salon. He made his début at the Salon in 1831 with the House of the Alcalde, View of the Royal Residence in Aranjuez, Taken Opposite the Waterfall of the Tagus and Philip IV and his Children, after the work by Velázquez. He continued to paint and exhibit Spanish subjects thereafter, and these became one of the hallmarks of his work. In the 1830s he was commissioned by Louis-Philippe to paint a number of large historical compositions for the Musée Historique de Versailles, and this led to such works as the Battle of Hooglede, 13 June 1794 (Salon 1836) and Godefroy de Bouillon Holding the First Assizes in the Kingdom of Jerusalem, January 1100 (both Versailles, Château). He also painted such religious subjects as the Massacre of the Innocents (exh. Salon 1845; Rouen, Mus. B.-A.), and he decorated the chapels of such churches as St-Ambroise, St-Antoine-des-Quinze-Vingts and St-Vincent-de-Paul, all in Paris.
