(3) Pieter de Jode (i)

(b Antwerp, 1570; d Antwerp, 9 Aug 1634). Draughtsman, engraver and publisher, son of (1) Gerard de Jode. Around 1595 he travelled to Rome, and later to Holland, where he was a pupil of Hendrick Goltzius, and Paris. In 1599–1600 he was admitted into the Antwerp Guild of St Luke as a master’s son. In 1602 he married Suzanna Verhulst, a sister-in-law of Jan Breughel I, who himself married Pieter’s sister Isabella. In 1607–8 and 1608–9 de Jode was respectively dean and chief dean of the Guild. Nicolaes Ryckmans ( fl 1616–22) became his pupil.
