Jamete, Esteban [Jamet, Etienne]
(b Orléans, c. 1515; d Cuenca, Aug 1565). French sculptor and architect, active in Spain. He was the son of master mason Jamet Loxin and came to Salamanca in 1535. His work combines the Italian influence seen in French sculpture of the early 16th century with heraldic motifs of the Isabelline style, and these often merge harmoniously in a manner characteristic of Plateresque. He enriched the traditional biblical iconography with symbolic figures, myths and allegories and structured his compositions with a free use of architectural elements.
