Ivan, Johannes
( fl 1449; d Alunda, Uppland, 1465). Painter, active in Sweden. He worked in the province of Uppland, and he may have been one of the many German artists and craftsmen to settle in Sweden during the Middle Ages. His earliest known works are the wall paintings in Östra Ryd church, near Stockholm, the first and probably the largest portion of which he signed in 1449 (a presumed addition was made in 1459). Shortly afterwards he executed the paintings in the churches of Lena and Vendel, Uppland, the latter in 1451–2 according to the signed inscription. An inscription (destr.) recorded that he died during the course of painting the chancel of Alunda church and was buried there. The paintings were completed by three artists of the so-called TIERP SCHOOL; the similarity of his style to that of the Tierp school painters suggests that at least some of them were trained by him.
