Imana, Gil

(b Sucre, 1933). Bolivian painter, sculptor and teacher. From the age of 13 he studied at the Academia de Bellas Artes and in the workshop of Juan Rimsa in Sucre. An extremely active painter, Imana had 58 one-man shows and numerous collective exhibitions after 1950 in cities in Bolivia, Latin America, Europe and the Middle East. He was a member of the artists’ group Generación del 52, and in Sucre he was also the founder of the Anteo group of poets, writers and artists. His left-wing ideology linked him to the National Revolution of 1952, within the group of so-called ‘social’ painters. His subject-matter of social protest centred around the human figure, in particular woman, singly or in groups, with a slight landscape element, and frequently taking the theme of motherhood. He not only painted in oil and acrylic on canvas but also executed frescoes or acrylic murals, such as The Telephone Company (1956; Sucre) and Medicine (1983; La Paz, Medic. Coll.), and others in Lima and Callao, Peru. In addition, he was a draughtsman and produced graphic work and occasionally sculpture, such as Crucifix (1977; La Paz, priv. col.). Imana was the director of the schools of fine art in Sucre and La Paz, as well as a professor in Mérida, Venezuela. He was married to Inés Córdoba, a Bolivian ceramicist and textile artist.
