(1) François Hutin
(b Paris, 1686; d Paris, Aug 1758). Painter, sculptor and engraver. He was a pupil of Bon Boullogne and took part in the student competitions of the Académie Royale in 1709 and 1710. In 1737 he went to Rome with his son (2) Charles-François Hutin, where, although over 50, he was chosen to be a student at the Académie de France, remaining in the city for 7 years, 5 of them as a pensionnaire. In 1741, 1742 and 1743 he was entrusted with decorations for the Chinea festival (e.g. drawing, Munich, Staatl. Graph. Samml.). He also added sculpture to his list of accomplishments during his stay in Rome, carving among other works a marble bust (Rome, Acad. France). Back in Paris, both he and his wife, the painter Anne-Auguste Hérault (d 1771), were members of the Académie de St Luc, and together took the title of Painter to the King of Poland, Duke of Lorraine. François Hutin is known today only for his corpus of engravings, most of which are original prints.
