Hurtu, Jacques

( fl 1614–19; d before 23 June 1623). French designer and engraver. He was of the Protestant faith. Around 1614 he moved from Orléans to Lyon. He engraved c. 30 ornamental prints, mostly on black ground, divided into three series (Weigert, nos 1–3). These show watchcases, ornamental foliage, goldsmiths’ ornaments, quivers and escutcheons, surrounded by birds, mythological figures and small human figures. Two of the series are dated, one 1614, the other 1619; that of 1614 and the undated one were published in Paris by Pierre Firens (c. 1580–1638) and bear only the artist’s monogram. He signed himself J. F. on some prints of the series of 1619, Iacques Hurtu on others.
