Hughes, Trajan

( fl 1709–12). ?Welsh painter. He is known only by two very accomplished signed works, Cat and Fish (priv. col., see Waterhouse, p. 186) and Foxglove in a Wooded Landscape (priv. col., see 1987 exh. cat., no. 7); further examples are likely to come to light. These two works suggest Hughes, who may have been a gifted amateur rather than a professional artist, had some knowledge of the animal painter Francis Barlow.
