(3) Susanna Horenbout

( fl c. 1520–50). Illuminator, daughter of (1) Gerard Horenbout. Dürer mentioned her in the diary of his visit to the Netherlands in 1521, as follows: ‘Master Gerard, the illuminator, has a daughter of 18 named Susanna who has illuminated a small sheet, a Salvator, for which I gave her 1 guilder. It is a great marvel that a woman should do so much’. After moving with her parents to England, Susanna married John Parker, the royal Yeoman of the Robes (d 1537–8); thereafter she married John Gylmyn. She is mentioned as a painter and also on several occasions as a lady-in-waiting. She was still alive in 1550. However, attempts to attribute particular portrait miniatures to her are even more hypothetical than in the case of her brother Lucas.

Part of the Horenbout family
