(2) Hendrik Hondius II [the younger]
(b The Hague, c. 1615; d The Hague, between 27 Oct 1676 and 12 Jan 1677). Print publisher, son of (1) Hendrik Hondius I. He was a member of the Guild of St Luke in The Hague in 1635, soon after which he left the city for Brazil. Hondius married Barbara van Hoogstraten, daughter of the Dutch traitor Dirck van Hoogstraten. Hondius was taken prisoner by the Portuguese in 1645 and held at Bahias de Todos os Sanctos for five years, returning to The Hague in 1651. Like his brother Willem, he may have engraved a few early portraits for his father. After returning to The Hague, he published a few prints and books as well as numerous pamphlets, and from 1655 to 1657 he sold a paper known as De vliegende Mercurius (The flying Mercury) from a shop on the Hofstraat, Westzijde.
