Hoff, Povl Ernst
(b Copenhagen, 24 Aug 1903). Danish architect. He was in partnership with architect Bennet Windinge (190586) from 1942. Blocks of flats with communal facilities and institutions had a central place in their production. The block of flats Høje Søborg, Copenhagen (194951), was a pioneering work in Denmark. Similarly innovative were the high-rise blocks for the handicapped in Copenhagen (Hans Knudsens Plads, 1960) and Ålborg (Grønlands Torv, 1963), the students residence at Sorø Akademi (1963), and Værebro Park (1966), a large block of flats with integrated communal facilities. They also supervised the construction of the Montebello neurological hospitals in Gentofte and Helsingør (1963) and formed part of the team of architects that designed the high-rise housing complex Høje Gladsaxe (19628), including the shopping centre, schools and other facilities. These large buildings, based on prefabrication and industrial assembly techniques, were designed with a sense for the possibilities for this kind of project within a Modernist framework, but the architects abilities to create gently shaped and attractive surroundings came to the fore in smaller, institutional projects. A high point in their work, and in modern Danish domestic architecture in general, was, however, Søndergårdparken (1950), Gladsaxe, a modest, traditional arrangement of terraced houses in park-like surroundings.
