Hobbema, Meindert [Meyndert]
(b Amsterdam, bapt 31 Oct 1638; d Amsterdam, 7 Dec 1709). Dutch painter. Although limited in subject-matter and working from a remarkably narrow repertory of motifs and compositional devices, he nonetheless managed to imbue his area of specialization—the wooded landscape—with memorable vitality.
