(2) Sebastián de Herrera Barnuevo
(b Madrid, 1619; d Madrid, 1671). Painter, draughtsman, sculptor and architect, son of (1) Antonio de Herrera Barnuevo. His father was probably his first teacher, but Sebastián later studied with Alonso Cano, who had moved from Seville to Madrid in 1638. He was probably Canos chief assistant in Madrid during the 1640s; statements in Canos will of 1667 indicate that they remained friends. In 1649 Herrera Barnuevo received his first important royal commission, a design for the ephemeral decorations erected in Madrid for the state entry of Mary Anne of Austria, celebrating her marriage to Philip IV. As a result he was rewarded in 1649 with the royal appointment of ayuda de cámara (chamberlain).
