Hering, Loy

(b Kaufbeuren, c. 1485; d Eichstätt, after 1 June 1554). German sculptor. The son of Michael Hering ( fl 1460–90), a goldsmith from Kaufbeuren, he was one of Germany’s most productive sculptors in the earlier 16th century. On 15 April 1499 Loy was registered as a pupil of Augsburg sculptor Hans Beierlein and is next mentioned in 1511 and 1512 as paying taxes in Augsburg and living in the house of sculptor Jacob Murmann. Hering moved to Eichstätt probably in 1512 and definitely by 1515, when he was documented as working on an altar in the Willibald choir of the cathedral. Except for brief trips to Augsburg, Neuburg and other nearby towns, Hering remained in Eichstätt. He served on the inner and outer city councils (1519, 1522), in the tax office, and in 1523 and 1533 was one of the town’s four mayors.
