(1) Jan Sanders van Hemessen

(b Hemessen, nr Antwerp; fl Antwerp, 1519–56). He was the most original artist working in Antwerp between the death of Quinten Metsys in 1530 and the 1550s, when Pieter Bruegel the elder began his career. Hemessen’s moralizing genre and biblical scenes reveal his firm grasp of the human form and an earthy approach to narrative. His muscular and vigorously three-dimensional figures fill the foregrounds of his densely packed, sometimes confusing compositions and create a flamboyant sense of movement.

Part of the Hemessen family
