Hedlinger, Johann Karl

(b Schwyz, 28 March 1691; d Schwyz, 14 March 1771). Swiss medallist. Son of the painter Johann Baptist Hedlinger (1653–1711), he trained as a goldsmith and in 1713 engraved dies for the Lucerne Mint. While in Lucerne he worked with the goldsmith Wilhelm Krauer (1661–1718), as did his brother Johann Anton Hedlinger (1689–1755). In 1716 he travelled to France, where he worked for Ferdinand de Saint-Urbain and, the following year, at the Paris Mint. In 1718 he became Chief Engraver at the Stockholm Mint, where he produced medals, coins and seals, including medals commemorating events in the reigns of Charles XII, Queen Ulrica Eleonora and King Frederik, as well as a series of medals depicting Swedish rulers from the 9th century onwards (silver and bronze, c. 1728–45). He remained in Sweden until 1745, apart from visits to Italy (1726), St Petersburg (1735–7) and Fribourg (1741–3). In 1745 he returned to Schwyz, where he continued to execute medals until his death.
