Hartmann, Meister
( fl 1417–28). German sculptor. He is mentioned in the workshop records of Ulm Minster between 1417 and 1421. The sculptures he was paid for in the records are identical with parts of the surviving figure programme in the west porch of Ulm Minster; the payments of 1418 and 1419 appear to involve the sculptures on the piers (the Virgin, SS Martin, Anthony and John the Baptist), those of 1420–21 the 19 figures on the front wall of the narthex (the Virgin, six female Saints, the Twelve Apostles; see ULM, fig. 3). However, the Twelve Apostles and the Virgin for which Hartmann was paid in 1420 are not—as assumed by Habicht—the archivolt figures on the west porch, which are now attributed to the Master of the Kreuzwinkel ( fl 1387–91), but probably the lost Apostle cycle inside the minster, along the nave piers. Hartmann’s name does not occur in the records after 1421, although in 1427 he was mentioned in the Ulm taxation list, and in 1428 he was granted the freedom of the city.
