Hans von Geismar

( fl Hannoversch-Münden, 1489; d Göttingen, 1502/3). German painter. His origin in the Göttingen area is suggested by recorded payments in Hannoversch-Münden (1489, 1490) and an entry in the municipal finance manuals of Göttingen (1493), as well as by the stylistic register of his painting. The panels of an altarpiece (1499; Göttingen, Albanikirche) are the only work by him for which documentary evidence exists. They show eight scenes from the Life of the Virgin, with the Martyrdom of St Alban and the Last Judgement on the outer sides of the outer pair of wings. Smoothly painted and with simply constructed compositions, this work competes with Hans Raphon’s contemporary altarpiece of the Passion (ex-Paulinerkirche, Göttingen; Prague, N. Mus.).
