Haelwegh, Albert
(b ?Amsterdam or Deventer, c. 1600; d Copenhagen, 28 Aug 1673). Danish engraver and etcher, presumably of Dutch origin. Due to the occurrence of his surname in the northern Netherlands and to stylistic parallels between his work and that of the Haarlem engraver Jonas Suyderhoef, it is assumed that Haelwegh was Dutch and trained in the Netherlands. Further evidence for this may lie in his combined use of etching and engraving, the painterly style of his prints and the way they are bordered. Moreover, he contributed December (Sthyr, no. 9) to a print series of the Months after Joachim von Sandrart, engraved mainly by Dutch artists.
