Haagen, Joris van der

(b ?Arnhem, c. 1615; d The Hague, bur 23 May 1669). Dutch painter and draughtsman. He was probably the son and pupil of the Arnhem painter Abraham van der Haagen. Sometime after 1640 he settled in The Hague, where he lived for the rest of his life; he entered the Guild in 1643 and became its dean in 1653. Van der Haagen painted landscapes, which are formally composed and often heavily wooded and dark. His colour scheme of muted greens and yellows creates a sombre but naturalistic effect. In these respects his paintings resemble those of Jacob van Ruisdael, but they tend to lack van Ruisdael’s dramatic sense. Van der Haagen’s paintings reflect his preference for the hillier countryside of the eastern part of the Netherlands (e.g. Extensive Wooded Landscape, The Hague, Mus. Bredius), and he painted a number of panoramic landscapes in the area of Arnhem and Cleve and in the extreme south of the country near Maastricht. This preference is also seen in numerous drawings that he made during sketching expeditions to the wooded area of the Hoge Veluwe, where he took advantage of the high ground to record the extensive views over the Rhine Valley. He was one of the few Dutch landscape artists to draw panoramas, typically in grey wash and black chalk on several sheets of white or blue paper (e.g. View near Elten, 1660; Berlin, Kupferstichkab.). He also employed this technique, often with white chalk heightening, for studies of groups of trees, which he made in the same region and in the woodland near The Hague (e.g. View in the Haagse Bos, 164(?4); Paris, Fond. Custodia, Inst. Néer.). These, and his more finished studies of towns, are frequently confused with the drawings of Antoni Waterlo and Simon de Vlieger.
