Gulbransson, Olaf
(b Oslo, 26 Nov 1873; d Tegernsee, W. Germany, 18 Sept 1958). Norwegian draughtsman, caricaturist and painter. He studied first at the School of Applied Arts in Oslo, entering there in 1892, and later at the Académie Colarossi in Paris in 1900. However, from an early age he had worked as a caricaturist for newspapers and magazines. From 1889 to 1898 he worked for the newspaper Pejk and from 1889 to 1902 for Tyrihaus; he also contributed to Paletten, Flusoppen and other periodicals. In 1901 his 24 Karikaturer af Olaf Gulbransson (Oslo), a collection of caricatures of famous Norwegians, was published and this established his reputation. In 1902 Albert Langen invited Gulbransson to work for the periodical Simplicissimus in Munich and he soon became one of its foremost contributors, producing social and political caricatures. He was elected to the Akademie der Künste in Berlin in 1916 and in 1923 returned to Oslo, where he worked for the daily paper Tidens Tegn until 1927. After moving back to Munich he was appointed professor of drawing and painting at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in 1929, while continuing to work for Simplicissimus until 1949.
