Grandi, Ercole

(b Ferrara, c. 1463; d Ferrara, before 1 Nov 1525). Italian architect and painter. Vasari confused him with Ercole de’ Roberti, a mistake that was corrected only in the early 20th century (Venturi, 1914). He is recorded as a master in 1489 at the Este Court in Ferrara. In 1495 he prepared the drawings for the façade, the interior and the marble decoration of S Maria in Vado, Ferrara, executed by Biagio Rossetti and Bartolomeo Tristano (d 1519), with Antonio di Gregorio (d 1503). The church was later radically altered, however. Also in 1495 Grandi produced a design (see Zaccarini, fig. 1) for a bronze equestrian statue of Ercole I d’Este, of which only the pedestal was made (untraced). He has also been credited with the design for the Porta dei Leoni at the Palazzo Castelli and the pilaster decoration on the Palazzo dei Diamanti, both in Ferrara (Venturi, 1888).
