Giroldo (di Jacopo) da Como [Giroldo da Lugano]

( fl 1267–74). Italian sculptor. In 1267, Giroldo executed the monumental rectangular font in the cathedral at Massa Marittima. His name is preserved in the inscription on the upper border of one of the sides of the font: HOC OPVS EST SCVLPTVM A MAGISTRO GIROLDO. Hewn from a single block of travertine marble, each side is divided by trefoil arches between which are carved reliefs of Christ Blessing flanked by the Virgin and St John the Baptist, SS Regolo and Cerbone and scenes from the Life of St John the Baptist. A second secure work is a marble relief, possibly from a pulpit, of the Annunciation (San Miniato Cathedral), which is dated 1274 and signed GIROLDVM QVONDAM IACOBI DE CVMO, SVB A D. M. CC. L. XX. IIII. The only other autograph work is a marble relief panel in the abbey of S Maria, near Montepiano. It shows the Virgin and Child Enthroned flanked by standing figures of SS Peter and Paul and St Michael the Archangel, inscribed GIROLDO ME FECE. This relief is undated, but its style suggests it may be the earliest of the three works. Attributions to Giroldo include sculptural fragments of standing figures in niches (Lucca, Villa Guinigi), originally from S Frediano, Lucca, and probably from an altar, as well as a lavabo in the cathedral at Massa Marittima.
