Girolamo [Gerolamo] da Treviso [il vecchio] (i)

( fl Treviso, c. 1475–97). Italian painter. The identity of this painter is uncertain. A group of paintings produced in Treviso between c. 1475 and 1497 are signed Hieronymus Tarvisio; several of them are also dated. Documents show that there were two painters who might have used this signature, both active in Treviso at the same time, both of whom died in 1497. They are Girolamo di Bartolomeo Strazzarolo da Aviano (documented 1476; d between 29 May and 26 Oct 1497) and Gerolamo di Giovanni Pennacchi (1455–before 15 May 1497), the elder brother of the painter Pier Maria Pennacchi. Unfortunately, no extant painting is securely documented as the work of either man. Because an inscription on the back of St Jerome in the Wilderness (Bergamo, priv. col., see Zocca, p. 389) says that it was painted in Padua, and Girolamo Pennacchi stated in his will of 17 July 1496 that he had previously worked in Padua, the oeuvre has been ascribed to him; conversely, it has also been given to Girolamo Strazzarolo da Aviano, because in September 1496 he was given a barrel of wine in payment at Paese, near Treviso, where an altarpiece of St Martin and the Beggar (in situ), signed Girolamo da Treviso, is dated 1496: it is assumed that the wine was in part payment for the painting. Federici, followed by Coletti and Nepi Scirè, identified the artist as Girolamo Strazzarolo da Aviano; Biscaro, Paoletti and Ludwig and Zocca claimed he was Girolamo Pennacchi; Fiocco and Longhi divided the oeuvre between the two men.
