(1) Giuseppe Ghezzi
(b Comunanza, nr Ascoli Piceno, 1634; d Rome, 1721). Painter, illustrator and administrator. First taught by his father, after 1650 he may have been a pupil of Lorenzo Bonomi (160366) in Fermo. Some surviving works in and around Ascoli Piceno have been attributed to his early oeuvre, including an altarpiece of St Thomas of Villanueva, inscribed and dated 1669 (Marrovale, S Agostino). He emigrated to Rome in the late 1660s. Among the first works he executed there is the altarpiece (before 1674) representing the titular saint for the church of S Maria del Suffragio (in situ). This picture reflects Ghezzis rapid assimilation of contemporary Roman painting, especially the styles of Pietro da Cortona and Giovanni Battista Gaulli. In 1674 he became a member of the Accademia di S Luca, and thereafter executed numerous altarpieces in Rome, notably the Departure of St Paul (1676; Rome, Pal. Barberini). Two of his most highly regarded pictures were executed between 1695 and 1702 for the Chiesa Nuova at S Maria in Vallicella, Rome: the Creation of Adam and the Resurrection of the Dead (both in situ). These exhibit his mature pictorial style, his impassioned use of chiaroscuro and his gift for dramatic composition.
