Gertner [Gärtner], Christoph

(b ?Arnstadt, c. 1575–80; d after 1623). German painter and draughtsman. From stylistic evidence he must have spent some time around 1600 in the circle of the court painters to Emperor Rudolf II in Prague. In 1604 he was engaged as court painter by Henry Julius, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel; he worked at the Duke’s residence at Wolfenbüttel until 1621, then entered the service of the Protestant archbishop Christian William of Brandenburg. Gertner is exemplary among those painters of the era who carried a training at the imperial court to provincial, usually Protestant, courts, not without a certain loss of quality. The individuality of his art can best be seen in his drawings, about 40 sheets being known. Their formal qualities, the style of his figures and the iconographic treatment derive from Rudolf’s court painters Hans von Aachen and Joseph Heintz I. However, with the artists he headed at Wolfenbüttel, Philipp Rudolf Hübner (c. 1585–after 1625), Sebastian Schütz (c. 1595–after 1631), Hans Georg Wolff (c. 1590–1618/19) and Blasius Maler of Würzburg ( fl c. 1627), and under the influence of the art of Joachim Wtewael and Abraham Bloemaert, Gertner gradually developed an unmistakable ornamental style of his own.
