(6) Fujiwara no Takanobu

(b 1142; d 1205). Painter and poet, stepson of (5) Fujiwara no Shunzei. Born into an aristocratic literary family, he was known by his peers to be a skilled artist and an accomplished poet. However, as a courtier, for whom painting was an avocation rather than a profession, Takanobu remained outside the purview of the Edokoro (Bureau of Painting), instead becoming one of the amateur painters with professional skills who were emerging at that time.
