Fonvizin, Artur (Vladimirovich)
(b Riga, 11 Jan 1883; d Moscow, 19 Aug 1973). Russian painter. The son of a German forester, he studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (19014) and private academies in Munich (19046). He took part in the Blue Rose exhibition (1907) and was a member of the Jack of Diamonds group and the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia (AKhRR). In 1922, 1924 and 1925 he exhibited with the Makovets group, which sought the rebirth of easel painting and developed a lyrical, expressionistic style. This was particularly important to Fonvizins aesthetic, as was his contact with Mikhail Larionov, a friend from student days.
