(2) Frans Floris I
(b Antwerp, between 17 April 1519 and 1 Oct 1520; d Antwerp, 1 Oct 1570). Painter, draughtsman and etcher, brother of (1) Cornelis Floris II. He was one of the leading exponents of ROMANISM in Antwerp, and his history painting influenced a generation of Flemish artists. He was largely responsible for the introduction of studios organized in the Italian manner, with skilled assistantsa practice subsequently adopted by other Netherlandish artists, most notably Rubens.
