Falcone, Andrea

(b Naples, ?1630; d Naples, before 23 March 1675). Italian sculptor. He was the great-nephew of the painter Aniello Falcone and probably trained in the workshop of Cosimo Fanzago. During a visit to Rome in 1659 he executed two marble putti for the altar of the sacristy in S Agnese in Agone and studied the works of François Duquesnoy (e.g. St Susanna, S Maria di Loreto) and those executed by Jacques Sarrazin, such as the stucco telamones of the Porfirio Chapel in S Lorenzo in Miranda. These examples of Roman classicism were decisive for the future development of Falcone’s style when he finally returned to Naples and renewed contact with the Baroque tradition of Fanzago. Six stucco Angels (1668; Naples Cathedral, Cappella del Tesoro) and the monumental statues depicting Prudence, Temperance and Divine Justice (c. 1672–5) that stand before the Cappella della Purità in S Paolo, Maggiore, are examples of his work that are outside the pure Baroque tradition. The tomb of Giulio Mastrilli (1672; Naples, S Maria del Purgatorio ad Arco) and the Virgin and Child and two Allegories of Charity (Naples, Pio Monte della Misericordia) show the balanced combination of the two components of his style, the classical elements tempered by ‘picturesque’ modelling, with broad areas of light and shade.
