(2) James Faed
(b Gatehouse of Fleet, 4 April 1821; d Edinburgh, 23 Sept 1911). Painter and engraver, brother of (1) John Faed. He inherited his fathers mechanical aptitude, and after James srs death he joined (1) John and (3) Thomas in Edinburgh c. 1846, intending to take engineering classes. However, he was drawn into the painting activities of his brothers and after experimenting with oils took up mezzotint engraving, inventing a machine for speeding the process. James specialized in engraving portraits after Francis Grant and other eminent painters. He also painted landscapes and miniatures.
